15-16 April: London to Kyoto

Along the river (Avon) towpath, under the suspension bridge, through Pill, over the motorway bridge and back along the other side. Lovely bright morning.

No sign of the sun for days then this treat:

We boldly set out to join the local Park Run only to find that it was cancelled due to the wild weather. It was blowing a serious gale so we instead did our own shorter version up and down the sea front. A modest 3.1km on Strava …
Bright blue sky on Sunday, though a cold wind still blowing at over 30km/h. Along the front, past the Upside-down house. Eggs Benedict for brunch then searched for pebbles with holes and watched some acrobatic kite surfers.
Checked out Picasso’s masterful Guernica in the company of my old buddy, Mike T.

Picked up Laurence at Venice Beach (after Si got our room changed in the motel – noisy traffic all night) then headed up to the Getty Centre, an amazing temple to art, money and philanthropy.

From there we drove up into the Hollywood Hills for a hot hike up to the famous sign, though only Si made it all the way for a photo.

Then we headed (very slowly through horrendous traffic) to the Saskana restaurant to see the famous and charming piano educator, Aimee Nolte, playing and singing on her weekly gig. Between sets she joined us for a wide-ranging chat.
Up early and down to the beach at Morrow Bay where the surfers are already out at 7:00am. Picked up some new birds, too:
Then on to LA where we check in to the motel and meet Laurence at Santa Monica pier for a very enjoyable catch-up, on all sides:

… which also marks the western end of Si’s epic trip on Route 66 (“… from Chicago to LA, More than two thousand miles all the way.”

… and later back to our motel through the horrendous LA traffic. The white dots in the sky are planes landing, simultaneously on parallel runways:

Through San Francisco and over the bridge.

Scenic drive down Highway 1, starting in Carmel.

Some wildlife on the way.

Chilling in the motel in Morro Bay with shrimp and Sierra Nevada.
